“Expedite Growth in Domestic Tourism” Initiative Is Progressing Towards Enhancing the Sector

“Expedite Growth in Domestic Tourism” initiative is one of the outcomes of tourism lab within the National Program for Enhancing Economic Diversification. Implementation Support & Follow-up Unit (ISFU) supports and follows up the relevant entities responsible of implementing and following up the outcomes of the program, through the dashboard and the detailed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The initiative was launched in 2018 with the aim of developing a group of services, activities and projects catering for the needs of local tourists and improving their experiences.

The initiative aims at supporting the local tourism through planning to implement a number of projects such as providing public health facilities in petrol stations, making use of the beaches to attract tourism activities, and identifying active tourism sites to provide RV parks. The initiative also aims at developing integrated tourism service stations on the highways and main roads to provide High quality services for all visitors and tourists.

The initiative team prepared a structural plan to implement the initiative that aims to enhance the role of tourism sector in the economic diversification. The team works according to specific and applicable performance indicators, aiming to find models that are characterized with economic feasibility and future growth. In addition, work groups were selected to supervise different aspects of the initiative. A group was assigned to develop and finalize the public health facilities in petrol stations and public places. Furthermore, an agreement was made with companies marketing oil products to enhance 30 health facilities in petrol stations.

In 2018, beach development team assessed the readiness of different beaches in the Sultanate and their facilities, to study its ability to attract local tourism. The project’s vision revolves around improving beaches and providing them with the public facilities and beach activities. In the first phase, Sur Al-Hadeed beach in Alseeb was selected to hold a carnival for three days, with the partnership of Muscat Municipality, Ministry of Tourism and Omran Company, along with other public and private entities. This activity attracted more than 50,000 individuals, with the participation of more than 94 SMEs, local companies, productive families, non-profit organizations, tourism companies, and entrepreneurs specialized in entertainment and sports activities.

The head of the initiative team stated that the relevant entities are carrying out their tasks to encourage the local tourism. The focus will be on developing a number of big projects aiming to enrich the experience of the visitors in Wadi Bani Khaled, Sahoor Cave in Salalah, and Al-Ansab Lake in Muscat. The work team will also focus on increasing the number of facilities and services in the tourism destinations in the Sultanate.
